Origin Story

MrBeast, aka Jimmy Donaldson, started making video games at 13 years-old because he was obsessed with what makes a great YouTube video, analyzing the data on audience retention, and continuing to “make the best videos possible,” as you’ll hear him repeat in a number of interviews.

[UPDATE 5/6/2024] In early May, Donaldson separated from his manager for multiple years., Reed Duchscher of Night Media, after six years together. For those keeping count, that was when Donaldson was 18 years old. It is speculated this break results from Donaldson’s troubled entry into the food industry.

Channels

MrBeast ✪✪✪✪

  • These are silly challenges for the most part.
  • One of his first popular videos was just him counting to 100,000 in 44 hours, and now he owns multiple studios in North Carolina where they can build nearly any set he dreams up.
  • Most of his videos revolve around giving away money, and at first it seemed like he was showing off to me. After doing a deep dive into his motivations and character, however, now I can appreciate how he has fun, challenges himself and his team, and would rather give away money to people and invest it back into his business than keep more than he needs.
  • UPDATE 5/4/2024] In March of 2024, Donaldson announced that he wanted to slow down the pace of his videos so the storytelling could take center stage. On X, Donaldson also urged: “My fellow YouTubers let’s get rid of the ultra fast paced/overstim era of content. It doesn’t even work.”

BeastReacts ✪✪

  •  These are typical React videos, where they watch popular videos on the internet and judge them, try not to laugh at them, or or guess which has more views. That kind of thing.
  • React videos are mostly harmless, but there is little warning as to what they will be reacting to. So it could be cat videos, the world’s most dangerous animals, or TikToks.

MrBeast Gaming ✪✪✪

  • If you like gaming channels, these videos are fun. As with most MrBeast content, the set ups are slick and editing is fast.
  • MrBeast and friends do challenges like Red light, Green Light inside a game and challenge their subscribers to build something in Minecraft. If they vote it the best build in its category, then MrBeast buys the actual item for the fan.
  • There’s shit talk and some swearing, “your mom” jokes, etc.

Beast Philanthropy ✪✪✪✪✪

  • This is a great channel. His usual quick cuts editing style slows down here to really tell a story. I’ll be honest; it’s one of the best kinds of philanthropy videos I’ve seen. Honest, engaging, focus on the right people and challenges, then he finds a relevant sponsor to pay for the whole thing.
  • Beast Philanthropy is a great example of using your fame and money to do great things and encouraging your audience to do the same.
  • Read how MrBeast is lauded as the modern-day Wonka.

Summary

  • It’s mostly goofy fun with a philanthropic bent.
  • Even though the main channel isn’t to my taste, there’s no harm in watching them except for some light cursing.

Can this channel be watched unsupervised?

TLDR: Yes, if you have a conversation about his particular money situation.

  • YouTube will feed you more challenge and gaming channels, with very few at the quality level of MrBeast. There are a lot of copycats out there.
  • Most React video channels will include content not meant for children, or violent because that equals funny in some eyes.

Dialogues

  • MrBeast gives away most of the money he makes. He invests it back into his business or honestly just gives it away. Because of the wild nature of his presentations, adults might view his actions as showing off his wealth. It will help your children to view his videos in a different light if you explain the flow of money. He could be a LOT richer than he is now if he hasn’t given away most of his brand deal sponsorship money when he started getting them, or investing so much into Beast Philanthropy. But then he wouldn’t be MrBeast.
  • Explain the differences between his channels. MrBeast has said outright that Beast Gaming and Beast Reacts are just moneymakers for the main channel. Be sure not to neglect Beast Philanthropy; it is a great way to show the various levels of giving that MrBeast either does himself or uses his influence to cultivate.
