FEBRUARY 8, 2026 — I unexpectedly went on an “In Living Color” binge last night, and woke up to this incredible piece of Media History. We can thank the Wayan Brothers and an upstart FOX Network (ah, happier memories) for transforming the dull Super Bowl Halftime shows to a pop culture event that often overshadows even its famed commercials.
Even though I had very clear memories of watching this in 1992, I didn’t remember until I was reminded–by journalists/artist of color, obviously.
From NBC News Hour Anchor Geoff R. Bennett:
“‘When you watch the Super Bowl halftime show tonight, know that “In Living Color” helped make it what it is. In 1992, the show aired live counter-programming during halftime — and pulled millions away from the game. A year later, the NFL responded by booking Michael Jackson — launching the modern, superstar halftime show era. It’s among the stories explored in my book about the legacy of Black comedy, “Black Out Loud.” Pre-order at http://blackoutloudbook.com!
