West Coast YouTubers Update Fans on Their Safety During L.A. Fires

The fires still burning through areas of Los Angeles have led many creators to post updates to fans about their safety. Multiple production companies are announcing delays as the flames moved to more areas and at 7:29 PM EST, six people are reported dead.

A separate post for the GoFundMes and fundraisers can be found here.

Updates Saturday, Jan 11

The Instagram account for the show Colin & Samir confirmed that both creators lost their Pacific Palisades homes. They are pausing uploads for an indefinite amount of time to focus on their families (both creators are married with their first child on the way).

On the other side of town shortly after, plant and interior design creator Benji(plant) and his boyfriend, book blogger Chris Middendorf have also lost their Altadena home in the Eaton fires. Benji’s video showing the destruction of their community is heart wrenching, especially when you see how much love and care he put into their living environment with his plants.

Creators Across Social Media Devastated by Fires

Rhett McLaughlin, co-founder of Mythical, posted on Instagram that all 91 of their employees are safe, although most had to be evacuated.

Samir Chaudry, one-half of the excellent duo Colin* & Samir, who break down the business and trends of YouTube for creators, had a worse fate. “Everyone got out safe. Katie and my house burned down. The whole town is gone. My parents extended family and brother all lived in the palisades. It was the only home I knew.”

Chaudry explains that his wife is 37 weeks pregnant and his focus will be on his family. UPDATE JAN 11: Chaudry’s business partner Colin has confirmed he and his pregnant wife also lost their house.

Politics Girl showed her audience the bags she had packed to escape the fire and was ready to go, but also tried to explain how people there felt. “It is the most horrifying experience to look around your home and think, “Ok, I am never going to see any of this stuff again. What can I take with me?”

Adam McIntyre, who you might remember from the dialogues had around parasocial behavior the last couple of years. He details how he had just flown into Los Angeles when the fires started. There’s more to his story, but ultimately, he’s safe.

The Wildfires Are Live Streamed

Ben Meiselas of Meidas News told viewers/readers on his site that their comments helped he and his partner pass the time during evacuation. His first video after the evacuation, however, went into detail about his horror at Trump’s attacks after the fires.

Commentator Zaid Tabani details not just how large Los Angeles really is; he uses his platform to explain firsthand how these areas are not all movie stars, and how very vast a culture major cities can be.

I recently learned about actress and record-breaking car builder (seriously) Emelia Hartford, and on January 9th, she vlogged about the damage, learning on camera that it will be 4-5 days before they have power again. This video was also a fundraiser with many links to ways that her fans can help.

The Publish Press, an excellent newsletter for creators by Colin & Samir and Smooth Media, also listed lifestyle vlogger Ashley Paige and The Faze House as creators who’ve lost homes and/or evacuated, among others.

We’ll update you here as the situation continues.
