From Founding/Managing Editor Cindy Marie Jenkins:
OutThink Media fully supports the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) and SAG/AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild/American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) ongoing strike.
OutThink Media’s website and its social media channels focus on reviews for YouTube channels and their surrounding media landscape, such as influencer marketing and merchandise. These are not the companies associated with the strike as of today, July 21, 2023.
Since our primary coverage of the struck companies — new movies and television shows — centers around the conversations that families have while or after watching such media, as opposed to a more conventional review, and the unions do not yet call for a boycott of seeing media affected by the strike, I am comfortable with continuing to publish such pieces.
If I ever feel like our coverage may cross the virtual picket line, using the influencer guidelines that SAG/AFTRA set forth, then I’ll refrain from publishing such a piece until the strike is over.
At this time, I pay for my own tickets and streaming services and do not receive monetary or non-monetary compensation from any companies that do not support this strike.
Non-union influencers have been instructed not to post on social media to promote the work for a struck company, mainly if they seek to become members of the union in the future. As such, this doesn’t directly apply to myself or OutThink Media at this time, but we’ll keep a close eye on their recommendations to ensure our support is clear.
My opinion may evolve as the strike continues; for now, I am comfortable supporting it in other ways, starting with SAG/AFTRA’s guidance:
“There are a variety of ways you can show your support and solidarity! Please support us online and on social using #SAGAFTRAstrike and #SAGAFTRAstrong. We also recommend that you check out our social toolkit here. And join us on the picket line! Check out our picket schedule and locations here.”
